CHICAGO COMES TO ASHEVILLE IN EBLEN BENEFIT

EBLEN CHARITIES JOINS ASHEVILLE COMMUNITY THEATRE IN PRESENTING TONY AWARD WINNING MUSICAL TO BENEFIT MICHAEL WELLISCH CHILDREN’S CANCER SERVICES

If you liked the Asheville Community Theater / Eblen Charities presentation of Guys and Dolls last year, you are going to love Chicago.

Once again, the renowned Asheville Community Theatre is joining the Michael Wellisch Children’s Cancer Services of Eblen Charities in presenting the acclaimed musical Chicago on March 1st in the Heston Auditorium at the Asheville Community Theatre.

Now the longest running American  Musical in Broadway history, Chicago  has everything that makes Broadway great: a universal tale of fame; fortune and all that jazz; one show-stopping song after another; and the most astonishing dancing you’ve ever seen.

It is no wonder that Chicago has been honored with 6 Tony Awards®, 2 Olivier Awards®, a Grammy® and thousands of standing ovations.

It’s also no surprise that Chicago has captivated audiences all around the world, from Mexico City to Moscow, from Sao Paulo to South Africa.

And now thanks to the talent, dedication, and artistic vision of the Asheville Community Theater,

one of the most acclaimed musicals of all time is coming to Asheville.

Set in the midst of the roaring 20’s Chicago murderesses Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart  find themselves on death row together and fight for the fame that will keep them from the gallows. Filled with humor, drama, and high stepping musical numbers, this is one production of the Asheville Community Theatre that would be a crime to miss.

All proceeds from this enjoyable evening out will benefit the Michael Wellisch Children’s Cancer Services, a program of the Eblen Charities. Established in 1984 as the Michael Wellisch Foundation, this strong community-based program became part of the Eblen Charities in 1994.

Set up as a living memorial to Michael Wellisch, an outstanding student leader, scholar, and athlete, who lost his battle with cancer at the age of 19, Michael’s program provides assistance to children stricken with cancer and their families with medication, travel, and other emergency assistance.

The Michael Wellisch Children’s Cancer Services was the first named program of our outreach and served as the springboard to the development of our Children’s Outreach programs all of which will continue in the spirit that Michael began.

“Eblen Charities in partnering with Asheville Community Theater found a way to support both organizations,” states Tim Gwennap, of Eblen Charities.   “On Thursday March 1st, the performance of “Chicago” will be designated Eblen night. The money raised through the normal ticket channels at Asheville Community Theater will be split 50/50 with Eblen.”

“Susan Harper, managing director of ACT, was excited to work with Eblen to make this a reality.  “We need to do our part to make sure the theater is full to see this great show. This is a show that will fill up fast, so get your reserved seats ASAP by calling Asheville Community Theater.”
