THIRD ANNUAL SPRING CLEAN COAT DRIVE DISTRIBUTION TO GIVE OUT THOUSANDS OF COATS THIS WEEK
If you had a chance to step outside in early mornings this past week I am sure you have no doubt that fall has finally arrived. The crisp air has many of us reaching for the sweaters and jackets we packed away last spring and reminding us that winter is definitely on the way.
With heating assistance beginning next week Eblen Charities is once again joining WLOS-TV in getting a jump on the cold weather this week with the Third Annual Spring Clean Coat Drive Give-A-Way beginning this Tuesday.
As many of you know, last April WLOS and Eblen Charities held its third Spring Clean Coat Drive at Ashley’s HomeStore on Tunnel and Airport Roads.
Thanks to this event and all of the generous folks who brought their coats by during the 16 hour marathon event and in the weeks and months that followed, more than 10,000 coats were collected to help so many keep warm this winter.
Beginning this Tuesday, October 15th and continuing through Thursday, October 17th, Eblen Charities and WLOS will be distributing the coats at the Westgate Shopping Center in the Ingles Toy Store location (the old Bon Marche’ / Hamricks Department store). The coat give-a-way will run from 10:00 AM to 4:0o PM.
This amazing new program began with a partnership with WLOS-TV and Eblen Charities. Now thanks to additional partners Ashley Furniture Home Store, Two Men and a Truck, Asheville Cleaners, and Rita’s Italian Ice, a warmer winter is in store for thousands of the children and adults that will seek help from Eblen Charities when the cold winds of winter blow later this year.
“We can’t begin to thank everyone at WLOS, Ashley Furniture Home Store, Two Men and a Truck, Asheville Cleaners, Rita’s Italian Ice, all who volunteered and everyone who was so generous in donating their coats to the Spring Clean Coat Drive,” states Bill Murdock, executive director of Eblen Charities.
“Last April, we honestly didn’t know how we would be able to even come close to the 5,000 coats that so many donated during our coat drive last year. But once again the wonderful and generous people in our community stepped up to take care of those who are less fortunate. Thanks to the vision and kindness of WLOS and everyone involved we will be able to help keep more children and adults warm this winter than ever before.”
The idea for a spring coat drive came from Estee Felten and Guy Chancy of WLOS as they thought that a number of community coat drives are held in the fall and winter, and that the spring would be a great time to offer everyone in our community a chance to donate their coats at the end of winter instead of packing them away or taking up room in their closets.
And by having them early, Eblen Charities has ample time to go through the donations, clean the coats if necessary and get them ready to give to those in need this coming fall and winter.
Once again our deepest gratitude to Jack Connors, Estee Felton, Guy Chancy, Victoria Dunkle, Jason Boyer of WLOS, John Miller of Ashley Furniture Home Store, Todd Campbell of Two Men and a Truck, Guy Roberts of Asheville Cleaners, and all who volunteered and donated their coats to make sure no one is left out in the cold.
Special thanks also to Eblen Charities Cindy Estes, for chairing and overseeing the project, as well as volunteers Jan Burleson and Johnny Olup for the sorting, sizing, cleaning, and getting the massive amount of coats ready for this week’s distribution.
If you missed the chance to donate your coats during our Spring Clean Coat Drive and would still like to do so, please drop them by the Waddell Client Service Center in the Westgate Shopping Center off of Patton Ave any day Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM.
