With one of the most unusual winters on record that brought us some of some of the coldest temperatures on record as well as some of the warmest we are all looking forward to spring and and even more milder temperatures on the way. And with that many of us may be starting to think of flowers blooming, longer daylight and fresh spring air drifting through our open windows.

But to many of us spring can also mean a return to the annual tradition that has become as much part of the season as planting flower gardens or cranking up our lawnmowers for the first time since the fall – the tradition of “spring cleaning”.

Once again this year, spring cleaning will not only give us the opportunity to clean out our closets but also give many of the children and adults that Eblen Charities serves a chance to keep warm next winter.

On Friday, April 20th Eblen Charities will once again team up with long-time friends and partners WLOS-TV, Two Men and a Truck and Ashley Furniture HomeStore for the Seventh Annual “Spring Clean Coat Drive” at Ashley Furniture HomeStore on Airport Road.

The Spring Clean Coat Drive will begin at 4:30 AM and will run until 7:00 PM, collecting all sizes and styles of coats that are new or gently used for the hundreds of families that Eblen sees each week seeking help in keeping warm during the frigid winter months.Coats will also be collected at Westgate Shopping Center at the Ingles Toy Store (the old Bon Marche/ Hamricks Department Store) from 7 am to 7 pm.

In the past six years more than 35,00 coats were collected and distributed.

As winter comes to an end, families will be storing away winter gear to make room for spring styles as warm weather is finally coming our way.

After a long winter, many may be tired of their old coat’s style and most children will outgrow this year’s coat before next winter arrives. So instead of putting them in boxes to store away or throwing them out, the folks at WLOS came up with the idea which asked the question “why not donate them to a good cause?”

It also seems to be a good time as people begin to to clean out overcrowded closets to get rid of those bulky winter coats that take up so much space. Also many retailers will be discounting winter wear to make way for their spring & summer lines, so it’s a great time for those who wish to donate to purchase new coats as well. So there is no better time to collect coats.

Coats donated in the spring will go to help those less fortunate who are in need of a good coat in the winter. Given the pattern of our unusually harsh winters in recent years, coupled with our economy, the need is greater than ever.

“We can’t begin to thank WLOS enough for once again reaching out to help those in need in our community during these troubled times,” states Bill Murdock, executive director of the Eblen Charities. “Last year we distributed more than 7,500 coats to persons in need in our community who visited our Waddell Client Service Center at Westgate. Now thanks to the vision and kindness of WLOS and the generosity of Ashley Furniture HomeStore,Two Men and a Truck, and Asheville Cleaners we will be able to help keep more children and adults warm next winter than ever before.”

Our gratitude to Jack Connors, Estee Felton, and Guy Chancey of WLOS, Todd Campbell of Two Men and a Truck, Guy Roberts at Asheville Cleaners, Ashley Furniture HomeStore for allowing us to join them in this great event.
