WLOS-TV / EBLEN “SPRING CLEAN” COAT DRIVE THIS THURSDAY AT ASHLEY HOMESTORE

This past winter in our mountains saw record setting low temperatures which has made the coming of spring never more welcome than it was a few weeks ago.

And along with the beginning of spring comes a tradition in our community that has grown during the past six years not only as a sign of spring in our community but one that has kept thousands of children and adults warm throughout the winter.

This Thursday, WLOS-TV, Ashley HomeStore, Eblen Charities, Two Men and a Truck, and Asheville Cleaners are joining together to help our neighbors clean out their closets  by donating  the coats they may no longer be needing to the WLOS-TV “Spring Clean” Coat Drive.

The coats collected during the drive will help ensure that children and adults who don’t have the luxury of having a coat to ward off the cold next winter will find themselves warm as the temperatures drop.

The Coat Drive will begin at 4:30 AM and will run until 7:00 PM, at Ashley’s HomeStore on Airport Road, the Ingles Toy Store and the Eblen Charities Waddell Client Service Center at the Westgate Shopping Center.  We will be collecting all sizes and styles of coats that are new or gently used for the thousands of families that Eblen Charities serves each year seeking help in keeping warm during the frigid winter months.

WLOS will be broadcasting throughout the entire event from the Ashley’s HomeStore on Airport Road beginning at 4:30 AM until 7:00 PM.

A UNIQUE SPRING EVENT

As winter comes to an end, families will be storing away  winter gear in lieu of spring styles as warm weather is finally coming our way.

After a long winter, many may be tired of their old coat’s style and most children will out grow this year’s coat before next winter arrives. So instead of putting them in boxes to store away or throwing them out, the folks at WLOS came up with the idea which asked the question “why not donate them to a good cause?”

It also seems to be a good time as people begin to clean out overcrowded closets to get rid of those bulky winter coats that take up so much space.  Also many retailers will be discounting winter wear to make way for their Spring & Summer lines, so it’s a great time for those who wish to donate to purchase new coats as well. So there is  no better time to collect coats. Coats donated in the spring will go to help those less fortunate who are in need of a good coat in the winter. Given our economy, the need is greater than ever.

“With this particularly cold winter we saw a great need in our community working to keep themselves and their families warm.

Thanks to everyone at WLOS, thousands of coats were collected and then given out at the beginning of fall and throughout the winter months,” states Bill Murdock, executive director of the Eblen Charities. “It is amazing to see the wonderful work of WLOS and the generosity of everyone who donated coats last year. We are thankful to have this opportunity once again and to continue to make sure that no one is left out in the cold.”

Our gratitude to Jack Connors, Estee Felton, Hillary Parham, and Guy Chancey of WLOS, Todd Campbell of Two Men and a Truck, Guy Roberts at Asheville Cleaners, and everyone at Ashley’s HomeStore for joining us in this great event.
