Christmas in July Toy Run has quickly become one of Eblen Charities most anticipated events of the summer as it helps provide toys for thousands of children in Buncombe County who may be facing an empty tree on Christmas Morning.
This annual benefit ride is put on in conjunction with the Smoky Mountain Toy Run to raise money and collect bicycles for Eblen Charities. Smoky Mountain H.O.G.
Director Steve Caraker states, “Our Christmas in July event is half of our annual fundraising effort to provide bicycles and toys for underprivileged kids in western North Carolina. We’re honored to work on this with Eblen Charities as part of their Saint Nicholas Project
During the past four years the ride has continued to grow, so to make the ride more enjoyable and to welcome our returning and new riders, we are expanding the route from previous years and adding new events at the end of the ride to make the event more fun and enjoyable to everyone who rolls in on Saturday.
This year the ride will once again leave from Harley-Davidson of Asheville with bikes arriving at 10:00 AM with ride beginning between 11:00 AM and Noon. and will return around 2:00 PM ending the run back at the dealership.
Last December, Eblen Charities’ St. Nicholas Project, in partnership with the Asheville Harley Owners Group, Ingles Markets, WLOS-TV, the Asheville Citizen-Times and iHeart Radio helped to provide a memorable Christmas for more than 4,000 children in our community.
Thanks to our wonderful partners the Smoky Mountain Toy Run and the Ingles Toy Store at Westgate Shopping Center in West Asheville, Eblen has seen more and more families each year who call upon us during the holidays to ensure that children will not wake to see Santa didn’t come to visit.
“We are excited about joining our friends in the Smoky Mountain Hog Chapter, Harley Davidson of Asheville, and Ingles Markets for this year’s event,” states Bill Murdock, executive director of Eblen Charities. “It is always a pleasure working with them in providing a memorable Christmas for so many families these past years and once again to be part of the Christmas in July Toy Run. With the ever increasing needs we have seen during the Christmas Holidays, this event will certainly help us begin building up toys for the Ingles Toy Store for the children we will serve this December.”
Last year the the Smoky Mountain Toy Run, along with the Eblen Charities’ Saint Nicholas Project and Ingles Markets, gave out more than 20,000 toys to children in our community.
The Saint Nicholas Project, The Smoky Mountain Toy Run
The Saint Nicholas Project provides Christmas gifts, clothes, food, and other items to the children and families who are in need in our community each year. Thousands of children and their families are able to have a bright and memorable holiday that they may otherwise have been without thanks to our many sponsors, companies, and friends who adopt families for Christmas and through the Ingles Toy Store at Westgate.
Beginning in 1981 with only 12 motorcycles, the Smoky Mountain Toy Run has grown to see thousands of riders each year. It has touched countless lives and has brought hundreds of thousands of smiles to children in our community for nearly three decades. Started by the late Gene Lummus, the hard work, dedication, and great kindness of all involved has seen the Smoky Mountain Toy Run become the largest event of its kind in the state.
