If you are familiar with Eblen Charities you are certainly aware that the month of May is one of the busiest months for events during our calendar year.
Beginning this Monday, May 28th, the new Wicked Weed / Brad Johnson Celebrity Golf Classic kicks off for the sixth year with the Hickory Tavern Celebrity/ Sponsor Reception in Biltmore Park. Sponsors, teams, and celebrities and other Eblen Charities’ supporters will come together to ring in the 29th Annual golf tournament that will raise funds to reach out to those children, adults, and families who call upon Eblen to help them in their time of need.
On Tuesday, May 29th the quarterback of the Super Bowl XXXVII Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Eblen Charities’ honorary chairman will again return home to host his signature tournament that has touched the lives of countless children, adults, and families in our community.
“We are honored and proud to be announcing that our long-time friends, supporters, and partners at Wicked Weed are now the title sponsor of the tournament and is adding a lot of new events and excitement to western North Carolina’s most anticipated sporting events,” states Bill Murdock, executive director of Eblen Charities. “Last year thanks to Rick and Ryan Guthy we joined together to create the Wicked Weed Help at Home Emergency Assistance Program to reach out and help families in our community who are facing difficult times. The money raised from the tournament will help ensure that the families we serve receive the help they need.”
Thanks to Brad the tournament has grown since its inception from a 20 team afternoon event to a two day event fielding more than 60 teams in a morning round and afternoon round.
The tournament is again being held at the Jack Nicklaus championship course at the Cliffs at Walnut Cove. In addition to Brad, other celebrities this year include former Washington Redskin Quarterback and Congressman Heath Shuler, Steve Vacendak of Duke University, former top NFL official Gerald Austin, and world wrestling champions Abe Jacobs, Nikita Koloff, as well as popular broadcasters Jason Boyer, Brian Hall, and Mike Morgan. and NY Times Best Selling Author Mike Mooneyham.
“I always look forward to this time of year, coming back to Asheville, and being able to be part of this wonderful event,” says Brad. “I get a chance to see my old friends, family, coaches and team-mates from Owen. But most of all, it’s coming back home and joining Eblen Charities, Verizon Wireless and all the sponsors, teams, and their outreach that touches so many children, adults, and families in their times of need here at home. I have yet to see a more effective organization anywhere than Eblen. It is great honor for me be be part of their outreach and serve as honorary chairman.”
