We are just a two weeks away from Asheville’s most anticipated golf tournament that not only has brought companies, sponsors, national and world renowned celebrities, and friends together for the past 29 years, but has also touched hundreds of thousands of lives of families in times of need.

For the fifth year, the tournament festivities will begin on the Monday night before the Tuesday tournament with a special Celebrity / Sponsor reception hosted by one of Asheville’s most popular restaurants and sports meeting venues.

Hickory Tavern in Biltmore Park will again host the Hickory Tavern Celebrity / Sponsor Reception on Monday, May 28th beginning at 5:30 pm.

“The reception is a great way for everyone who is involved with the tournament to come together before the golfing starts on Tuesday to relax, join with old friends, meet new ones and launch the silver anniversary of the Verizon Wireless / Brad Johnson Celebrity Golf Classic,” states Bill Murdock, Executive Director of Eblen Charities. “The wonderful staff at Hickory Tavern have been extremely kind once again to host the reception this year. Last year was the largest attendance we had at the golf reception to date, and we are looking for another tremendous evening. I can think of no better place to begin this year’s tournament.”

Beginning in 1990, the now Wicked Weed Verizon / Brad Johnson Celebrity Golf Classic has served as Eblen Charities’ signature event, and it was this event that gave the work of Eblen its start.

For the 12th year the tournament will be held on at the Cliffs at Walnut Cove with tee-offs at 8:00 AM and 2:00 PM on Tuesday, May 29th.

“I always look forward to this time of year, coming back to Asheville, and being able to be part of this wonderful event,” says Brad. “I get a chance to see my old friends, family, coaches and teammates from Owen. But most of all, it’s coming back home and joining Eblen Charities, Wicked Weed and all the sponsors, teams, and their outreach that touches so many children, adults, and families in their times of need here at home. I have yet to see a more effective organization anywhere than Eblen. It is great honor for me be be part of their outreach and serve as honorary chairman.”

In addition to Brad, other celebrities this year include Steve Vacendak of Duke University, top NFL officials Gerald Austin, and world wrestling champions Abe Jacobs and Nikita Koloff, sportscasters Brian Hall and Mike Morgan, former NFL quarterback and US Congressman Heath Shuler, NY Times Best-Selling Author Mike Mooneyham, WLOS meteorologist Jason Boyer, and WLOS CEO Joe Fishleigh.

Through the combined efforts of more than 60 teams, dozens of sponsors, and more than 70 volunteers, the Wicked Weed / Brad Johnson Celebrity Golf Classic not only has grown to be one of the premier tournaments in western North Carolina but has touched hundreds of thousands of lives during the past 27 years.
