Summer vacation is the time of year that most students look forward to as homework, tests, and classes give way to sleeping late, swimming, and relaxing days in the sun.

But for far too many students, summer vacation means only one thing and that is the fear that they will not have enough to eat during their time away from school.

One in five children in our community struggle with hunger each day and many times the meals they receive at school is the only food they will have to eat. When the holidays arrive, they face the chance of going hungry until they are back in class.

This summer the Arby’s / Eblen Charities JoyFULL Holidays at Home continues to expand is expand its unique partnership thanks to Joe Brumit, the Brumit Restaurant Group, and the Arby’s Foundation, to help ensure that students will have the food they need during the summer by providing free Arby’s meal cards to students in Buncombe County. More than 6,000 cards will be distributed providing 60,000 meals.

“We are very happy to continue our partnership with Eblen Charities and the Arby’s Foundation to help insure that hungry children are fed during their extended breaks from school. No child should ever go hungry and it is our goal to insure that in our hometown, and we hope to help spread this same attitude as far and wide as possible,” states Joe Brumit, president of the Brumit Restaurant Group.

“We are honored and grateful to Joe, Arby’s, and the Brumit Restaurant Group for their kindness and generosity in making sure that children who are less fortunate in these difficult times do not have to go hungry when they are out of school,” adds Bill Murdock, Executive Director of Eblen Charities. “I have had the wonderful opportunity to have known and been friends with Joe since the very beginning of Eblen Charities, and he was instrumental in the creation of Eblen Charities. Our community is indeed fortunate to have Joe and the Brumit Restaurant Group, Arby’s, and the Arby’s Foundation who reach out to so many in need. Western North Carolina certainly has no greater friends.”

The Arby’s JoyFULL Holidays at Home was created in the fall of 2013 in response to a growing need in our community. Many times the meals students receive at school is the only food they will have to eat and when the holidays arrive, they face the chance of going hungry until they are back in class.

To reach out to these children, Arby’s, The Brumit Restaurant Group, the Arby’s Foundation, and Eblen Charities joined together to create Arby’s JoyFULL Holidays at Home program to provide children with the food they may have to go without during the holidays.

Arby’s JoyFULL Holidays at Home program provides to children in our community to take home during the extended holiday breaks at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and spring and summer breaks.

The food is given to the students as they leave for the holidays and will be comprised of things easy to fix or eat right out of the package. In providing these specific items, children will be able to fix their own meals if their parents are at work. Student’s also are able to visit any Arby’s in Buncombe County and receive a free Arby’s Healthy Kids Meal each day during the Holidays by presenting their Arby’s JoyFull Holidays at Home meal card. The cards and the food to be taken home will be distributed through the schools.
