If there is one sport that is made for the beautiful mountains of western North Carolina it is cycling. Our mountains not only provide a beautiful backdrop for these tremendous athletes but provides them with a challenging course that is found in very few places around the world.

One of the world’s most prestigious bicycle race returns to Asheville next Sunday, July 22nd to benefit the work of Eblen Charities as the [ph]uel Gran Fondo National Series presented by Avadim Technologies, Wicked Weed Brewing, Ingles Markets, WLOS-TV, and iHeart Media rolls into town with more than 500 riders this Sunday, July 22nd.

A Gran Fondo is a cycling challenge that takes bicycle racing to the next level. Part personal challenge, part serious competition, the Gran Fondo National Series courses lead riders through country roads with challenging climbs and incredible scenery.

Courses are offered in lengths of 30, 60, and 100 miles so participants can take part in a distance that matches their goals and ability. Each rider is assigned an electronic timing-chip to keep track of their progress throughout the course and to allow riders to compete for best time through highlighted sections of the course.

There is no start to finish time as in traditional racing formats, but rather only time sections count toward a rider’s competition time which allows the riders to take their time between race sections, stop at the aid stations, and regroup to enjoy the ride with friends and teammates, on some of the most beautiful courses in the North America.

“We are honored to be part of the [ph]uel Gran Fondo National Series and be able to bring one of the most prestigious events in the world of cycling here to Asheville and to benefit the wonderful families we serve each day,” states Bill Murdock, Executive Director of Eblen Charities. “It is amazing to see an event that brings riders in from across the country and the world that also brings our community together to help those in times of need.”

The ride begins in the heart of Asheville at the Wicked Weed Funkatorium and quickly moves along well-marked winding roads out into pastoral countryside and up to mountain ridge vistas. The end of the ride, descends from the Blue Ridge Parkway into the heart of town, you will be afforded a spectacular cityscape view and greeted by fellow riders and families back at to Asheville at the Funkatorium where music, vendors, massage therapists, food and beer awaits.

Registration fees are $90 (30 mile) , $125 (60 mile), and $145 (100 mile) and can be done on line at http://www.bikereg.com/asheville-gfns or on Saturday at the packet pick up or Sunday morning before the race at the Wicked Weed Funkatorium on Asheville’s South Slope (147 Coxe Ave.).
