ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Friends that dance together also give back together.\
Our News 13 Persons of the Week include 150 members of the Mountain Shag Club who donated supplies and cash to the Ingles Tools for Schools Drive, which collects more than a million essential items each year.
Club members Sherrie Howard and Paul Peterson presented a check to Bill Murdock, who is the executive director of Eblen Charities.
“On behalf of the Mountain Shag Club, we’d like to present to Eblen Charities a check of $1,000,” Howard said.
“Thank you!” Murdock told them. “We do this all year long. It’s not just the beginning of school, it’s all year. This will help us fill in those gaps when we need to.”
As a teacher at Koontz Intermediate, Howard understands the need for school supplies as well as anyone.
“From a teacher’s standpoint, it is very exciting because I know that I may see some of these things come into my classroom,” she said.
The Mountain Shag Club’s gathers each week at Hickory Tavern in Biltmore Park.
“Spirit of giving back,” Peterson said. “I mean we just get together once a week and have fun partying and part of is supporting the community, being part of the community.”
Along with the Shag Club, dozens of community organizations, churches, and businesses step up. Biltmore Church, Great Beginnings Pediatric Dentistry, Lady’s Workout Express, and White Insurance are also big supporters.
Every group is like a dance partner Eblen Charities simply can’t do without.
