When the Paycheck Stops, the Work Doesn't: Eblen Charities Steps Up for Local TSA Agents
Every day, Asheville, NC, TSA agents show up to keep air passengers safe.
They staff the checkpoints, screen the bags, and ensure flights from Asheville, North Carolina, depart without incident. But during the last two federal government shutdowns, TSA agents working at Asheville Regional Airport faced a major crisis: they stopped getting paid for their ongoing work.
Mortgages, rents, utilities, and other bills came due while paychecks abruptly stopped. Financial uncertainty and pressure fell on our community members who were still required to work, with too few hours in the day to find a means of alternative income.
Eblen Charities recognized the need and reached out directly to local TSA agents to offer support. To date, Eblen has assisted eight agents, most of them in Buncombe County, with vital assistance to prevent life-altering disruptions.

One agent, who asked to remain anonymous, wrote, “I am reaching out today with humility and hope. Despite continuing to report to work and fulfill my duties to help keep passengers safe, I am currently struggling to cover my most basic living expenses.”
Brian Hall, Executive Director of Eblen Charities, said, “We recognize the essential role TSA workers play in keeping our community and travelers safe. When they face financial hardship, it impacts not only their families but the entire community. Eblen is committed to stepping in during times of crisis to provide support and stability when it’s needed most.”
